Plays like a guitar, sounds like a bass.
Ridiculously hip!
Surfs up!
Ok, accolades aside, a lot of ‘surf’ music was instrumental [and we are talking about a time before overdrives, choruses, wah wah’s etc] so instead you had to embellish the tune with reverb a, tremolo and a little finger power to flesh it out somewhat.
But this was a good era for musicians, and like today the new experiments to squeeze different sounds from the guitar itself were never ending. We had 12 strings, choral guitars, scale lengths were shortened, stretched, necks were widened and some were super thin – it was a time of experimentation, and the Fender BASS VI 6 string bass was one of the more successful of these experiments.
Musicians like Jet Harris and Tony Meehan from the Shadows had no. 1 hits on the strength of the unique sound of the BASS VI alone! Every other Italian cowboy movie theme had the BASS VI sound as the solo instrument……and what other bass had a whammy bar in the early `60`s ???
Now that’s cool !
