It may have been the Art Deco period, but whoever designed this unique Hawaiian instrument either
had a fantastic imagination or adventurous taste, considering this is circa late ‘50’s! Either way, this
is a collectors dream!
Made of Korina wood, with a single coil pickup, this Hawaiian guitar was all the rage in its day. It was
paired with the matching Gibson GA-5 amp, and must have sounded amazing.
This example is in beautiful condition, and has its original case.
How unusual can you get? If you look at the headstock shape and logo [especially as this was the
year of the Flying V, the Explorer and the Moderne] you begin to realise that Gibson really were
intent on modernising the look of the entire range of instruments to compete with the Fenders
and ‘new look’ Rickenbackers that were eating into their more conservative (they thought up to this
time) market.
